For many years Valentine’s Day would come around and it wouldn’t be such an exciting holiday for me. I would be upset that I was alone and didn’t have anyone. But you know what? That wasn’t true at all… though it did take me a while to realize that.
It wasn’t until I was 25 and living on my own that I came to a lot of life changes. I was fresh out of a break up, and I was really sad that it wasn’t going to be a romantic Valentine’s Day. My ex- boyfriend and I saw Deadpool together that day, but it still wasn’t the same as the previous years with him. It was strictly as friends, and for myself at the time it was nice, but also made me sad afterwards.
I really needed to find a way to not feel so down on a day that is going to come every year. Besides, who knows when I would be ready to be in my next relationship? So I started thinking of what would make me happy on this day. One thing I really love is giving to others and spreading love. Even though Valentine’s Day is mainly about couples celebrating their love for each other, it can be used for celebrating your love for your friends, family, or whoever else you care about in your life.
The next year I started to prepare gifts for all my friends and family a week before Valentine’s Day. I had to think of some great ideas for gifts and on a budget because I wasn’t working at the time, so I had to get crafty. I decided to bake cupcakes, make cards, and get sunflowers for a few of my friends, my mom, and one of my sisters.
It felt so amazing giving the gifts out to everyone. They all felt so loved, so I decided to continue that tradition into the following year because it brightened up my Valentines Day so much. This year I bought 2 boxes of Funfetti Valentine’s Day cupcake mix, a bag of sugar cookie mix, 4 jugs of vanilla frosting, dyes for the frosting, and all ingredients for baking the cupcakes and cookies. I baked all the goodies and gave them out to all my loved ones. This year I also specialized some goodie bags to my nieces because they’re at the age where they are thinking about boys.
When we give to others I believe that we receive happiness, but I also feel it is important to treat yourself. Having an even balance of giving to others and yourself is key. On Valentine’s Day I like to get myself some flowers, treat myself to a nice meal, a rich treat, and an activity I enjoy. Make yourself feel special on this day because you are very important.
For this Valentine’s Day I’m cooking my favorite meal for myself, which is ground beef tacos. I’ll watch Lord of the Rings (one of my favorite movie trilogies), get some pink roses for myself, and spend time with Cash. Right now I’m sick with the flu, so it will be a nice relaxing day at home. Luckily this year I already baked the cupcakes and goodies, so I was able to get them to my friends before I got sick.
So if your single on Valentine’s Day, remember you can be happy on this day! You are a good person, and giving to others and yourself will make you feel great. Stay positive, and think about all the things you can do this Valentine’s Day. I hope you all have a great day!
